Trash Tuesdays - Campus Clean Up! 2 Hours

This event was organized by the campus Green Team on the EDCC campus. The major goal of this is  to help eliminate the amount of trash and litter that makes its way into our lakes, oceans, and streams!  The duties we were given were those of spending plenty of time picking up this trash and litter across campus to do our pet for the environment. However, I failed to take a picture of this.
1This experience affected me in a positive light by reinforcing my pervious knowledge of the negative effects of trash and litter in the biosphere. Everyone, myself included, need to be reminded sometimes about the real effects our actions have on the greater world. This is why the role of science in society is so important. Science is always the strong basis for moving forward in society and is an important part in keeping the ways of the world together. If the people can understand something they will be more likely to work to protect or preserve if. A service this project does for the world is to keep many forms of marine life healthy which in turn keeps the world healthy.
Picking up trash may seem very unimportant and lame but in reality it fits in to what our class has taught. For every plastic bag we pick up and dispose of properly, that is another possibleleatherback turtle saved. This doesn't even start to begin on the effects micro plastics have on the food chain. As the smaller organisms eat these micro plastics and they pass up the food chain, it causes everything in the food web to be effected by the increased concentration of these plastics which then can kill the organism. The scale like this is why marine biology is interdisciplinary. There are so many ways that everything in the world if connected, with it all starting at the oceans. Every small factor in marine systems also effects every other system on eart, therefore it can incorporate tons of disciplines.

Questions raised from this were:
How much garbage can one college campus create per year?
How much effect could the loss of one type of zooplankton have on the food web?
What can be done to get people involved with saving the environment?
How do we reach out to politicians to help save the environment?
