Plankton Lab By Riley G and Katie M

So this is our little plankton guy! He sat right under the water with a few of the tips of his wooden sticks tips above the water but most of his mass was under. It was odd if we took of a stick he would sink if we put one broken back on he would float by adding more cork he would float. It was a weird balance and we couldn´t find the exact ratio of sticks and cork to clay. The clay is wrapped round a cork also. If this was an actual plankton it probably would have died by being roasted because it was so close to the surface and had things above the water but maybe its a more durable one and it wouldn´t. This could possible resemble plankton because of how many are out there but none that our group saw today.

  1. My group had the same struggle, if you added a little bit of something then it would sink and if you took anything off it would float. It was difficult to find the perfect balance so it would remain neutrally buoyant in the water. I like your idea of wrapping the clay around the cork, I did not think of doing something like that, but that is a cool idea.

  2. I think it's very interesting and clever how you organized the balance and the design of your plankton. It's surprising that it didn't stay long in the race, and that it more floated than sank. The corks at the ends of the sticks are surprisingly well counter-balancing the big ball of clay you used to make it sink.
