Purple Sea Star

This sea star was found in the lower inter tidal zone seemingly doing nothing. This organisms role is most likely a predatory one as it can eat many of the other organisms in the system.

The most interesting thing I saw on this trip was the moon snail and all of its egg cases, I have not seen the creator or those before! The coast of the Pacific Northwest is full of all kinds of life and we as humans need to ensure it's survival.

Why don't organisms such as sea stars and crabs walk to stay under the water when the tide goes out?

  1. I don't think crabs and sea stars want to stay out of the water, they're either too slow to move to might have gotten carried away running after a prey? But waves definitely move much faster than sea stars and so I really doubt they purposely end up in very dry areas. As far as crabs go, I have nooooo idea... they're a mystery to me.
