Spencer island

I'm so sad my phone doesn't take good photos so I don't have any good ones of birds :( these are most likely Great Blue Heron tracks and walking to Spencer Island I did see one! It was in a pond and this picture was also taken at a pond area. The one i saw was just kind of walking around most likely looking for food. It is a consumer and most likely helps keep fish populations down. The most interesting this I learned on this trip is that cotton woods and willows are the dominant trees and the dead trees in the water are from dredging. What exactly is dredging, like why is it needed I looked it up and it said it was just clearing out an area but why would they do it here?

  1. Hey Riley,
You answered a question that I had. I was really curious what kinds of trees were in the marsh. Now that I know what kind of trees they were I'm also curious what dredging is.

  2. You should have asked me! Usually dredging is done in wetlands to fill it in (deposit material like sand or gravel) to make docks, sea walls or to develop. In this case the island was dredged for a period of time & it has been more recently allowed to return to wetlands again.
