Human Impact at Carkeek Park

As I went to Carkeek this weekend, I also took time to take pictures of human pollution.

  • My friends and I walked by the trail to reach the beach, and noticed some plastic bags thrown in the river.

  • We also found cigarettes ends on the sand, this time on the beach.

  • The immediate danger of both plastic bags and cigarettes is the absorption by organisms as salmons/ birds for the Carkeek river, or by crabs/ birds etc. on Carkeek beach.
  • The long-term effect of plastics, as well as cigarettes butts is the spreading of millions of those from different places around the World, in our oceans. Indeed, the waves bring all the trashes to the same places. Some Pacific islands are even only made of human trash. Beside of polluting our oceans, they also intoxicate the marine organisms that ingest them, thinking they're eatable. Some examples of such organisms go from turtles, to dolphins and birds.
  • Hypothesis about the effects of one of these human impacts: Plastic bags and cigarette ends, thrown by the humans in our ecosystem intoxicate the marine organisms.
  • To address these human impacts on this marine ecosystem, prevention campaigns could be done. For example, schools should educate the future generations about pollution and the different ways to preserve our ecosystems. Besides, as some organizations already do, citizens of the living places should fix days per week or per month (according to the amount of pollution in the area) to clean up the beaches, rivers etc. in order to prevent the pollution of our lands and oceans. Finally, the governments should install stricter laws concerning the industrial pollutants, and check more often the factories that release everyday tons of pollutants in the rivers.

  1. Thats so sad that you guys found plastic bags just thrown around here. I also think that it is disgusting when people leave cigarettes just laying around of beaches like that. It is really so bad for the environment.

  2. Yes it is disgusting. People should be aware of the fragility of our environment. I personally smoke cigarettes, and as a smoker, I can tell it is not hard finding a garbage can to throw it... even beaches have some.
