Service Learning at the edcc garden (2:30-4:30pm)
I did my service learning hours on June 8 at our school's community garden. I did not have one specific job throughout the whole two hours; I did many different jobs. Carla was the coordinator for the community garden and the green team along with another lovely lady but unfortunately I forgot her name.
The two hours went by pretty fast for me because I really enjoyed doing pretty much everything. I helped to spread wood chips over a big area to help reduce the amount of weeds. I also helped to pull out weeds from the different beds of vegetables; I helped to make the stew for the worms. It was interesting because before we did any job, the coordinators would inform us about what we're doing and what it benefits.
My favorite part was gathering the harvest and tasting all the fresh foods that these lovely people before us planted! I think science is very important to our society especially for our farms because it gives us understanding to some extent. The more you understand what you are doing, the more relevant it becomes because you know what is at stake. Related to the community garden, science can help to explain the development of plants whether they are our natural food or weeds. Science is relevant to society because there are technology can only help to some extent. But to actually go out and gather research and conduct experiments may give you more accurate results. Primary producers are very important to our marine ecosystems and community gardens like this one, are our primary producers here on land! There are probably some plants in the community garden that are related to the green seaweed that we have in our oceans.I think it is very important that we continue to offer our volunteer services because everyone should get involved with helping our environment whether it be planting or cleaning. Experiencing this made me want to offer more of my time here at our community farm. This is also an example of a positive human impact. Marine biology is interdisciplinary because there are so many things that end up in our oceans. There are many marine animals that are not only marine but they also branch out to the animals on land. There are many marine plants that are related to the plants on land. Along with these plants, some can be used for medical purposes and so can coral. Marine Biology can affect almost everything, even us humans. It can definitely affect us because we gain many resources from our ocean.
1. Why are there not more volunteers that come out to the community garden?
2. How exactly do the wood chips prevent weeds from growing?
3. If there are no wood chips, what is a accurate substitute?
4. If people ate more fresh foods from gardens, how could that possibly affect our marine ecosystems?
