Spencer Island field trip
During my trip to Spencer Island, I captured this photo of two mallards; the female on the left and themale on the right. They were simply swimming in the pond. The female was following the malefor some unknown reasons. Male mallards play an important ecological role as seed dispersers, and mallards are also an important key in wetland's food chains, as they are have many predators.
During my visit to Spencer Island, I was very interested in visiting the three different areas of the island: the pond, the tidal wetland and the shoreline. That was the first time I went to Spencer Island and I really enjoyed it. This is a beautiful place, surrounded by both the mountains and the sea. I've been surprised about how important this island is to the Puget Sound by its purifying role to the water, and very interested in the trees along the slough that play the role of purifiers. Besides, I had the chance to see many organisms even though they were too fast to let me take pictures of them, as the Great Blue Heron, a frog, and some butterflies. This visit reinforced what I learned through this quarter about the importance of protecting the Northwest wetlands, and the Pacific Northwest in general. This class taught me to be patient, and to find and observe the different organisms in their natural habitat. My friend who came with me during this visit (I went during the weekend as I missed the visit with the class) really liked helping me with my observations, and plan to taking this Marine biology class in the future. During my visit to Spencer Island, I wondered if the trees that are implemented along the slough will always be able to reproduce enough and purify the water from all the toxins it has accumulated through its path along industries etc. Ecology is something that matters a lot to me, and I really hope one day humans will face our sad reality and change it before it's too late.
