Spencer Island

The organism I wanted to focus on was the cattail that was prevalent not just in Spencer Island but I also saw a lot at Edmonds Marsh. I saw cattail near where there was marshy areas with still water. Cattails help filter runoff that goes through streams and provides food and shelter for many migratory and native birds. I think the most interesting thing I saw was 3 great blue herons, they are really interesting creatures. I thought Spencer Island was really breathtaking and beautiful and marshes like this are very important to many ecosystems and to the watershed to help filter water. I don't think this experience really changed my perspective on wetlands other than remind me how pretty they can be. One question that this trip made me think about was, are there current efforts to make sure areas like Spencer Island will not be polluted or ruined from human activity?

  1. i also think that the cattails are really cool to learn about since we see them almost everywhere we have gone. Its so cool to see the same organism over and over again. I also really like seeing the herons! they are so beautiful to look at!

  3. There is a team of volunteers and snohomish county parks and facilities that take care of the island... but it's difficult to mitigate human impact when you are next to a pollution facility! 😱
