Shannon Point

I saw this organism on the boat, I had seen a couple earlier this week with my little sister at the beach but had no idea what it was. It was floating in the water, and when we asked what they were we were told they were a type of comb jellies called gooseberry. I read that they host alot of parasitic organisms, eat small plankton, and are consumed by at least 15 other organisms. So that means that they form part of a large food chain that would directly affect like 20 or more species. The most interesting thing I saw was the gumboot chiton, I love those things! I remember the first time I saw one I thought it was a rock with a sponge growing on top of it, and when I came back the next day I noticed it had moved. So me being me I suspiciously walked around the tidal pool because my genius self thought it would be ninja fast or something. Needless to say it didn't move and I'd wasted an hour shift playing spy on a moving sponge covered rock. Later that week I saw a larger tank that had like 4 of those dudes and had a "what are you doing with your life" reflecting moment. I love their big size, color, and leathery texture. I was so excited to see it, and it was hanging out with the super adorable sea cucumber. I also loved seeing the slime star again! This trip was so awesome, I didn't learn anything that changes my perspective about the pacific northwest, it continues to be a delicate ecosystem I am lucky enough to be part of and witness.

I had tons of fun with all of you guys~
I couldn't get a pic with all of you but this was one pic with at least more than three of you guys lol. #models

OH YEAH, the question! well.... Are the gooseberries edible? Idk, they look kind of good... like I wouldn't really eat it.... but I would. Also, are the invasive shore crabs having a severe long term affect on our local puget sound, if so what is it?

  1. Gooseberry fascinates me too. Good research! Surprising to see how much the little thing can do in the ecosystem. It sure was so much fun that day~

  2. I saw a gumboot too, but in the intertidal zone. That indeed looks half like a boot half like a rock. I also like the picture of your starfish. It really looks like a bread souffle!
